BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition Award for Joanna

Congratulations to Joanna Wojcik pictured above on receiving her “Highly Commended Award” in the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition recently. Joanna’s project was “A temperature scanning calorimeter for the investigation of small organic samples”. Joanna was mentored for her project by her Physics teacher, Ms. Y Hanbury.

The device showed the phase transitions of materials such as benzophenone and paraffin wax and successfully measured the melting points of the materials which were tested.

While planning the design of the device, Joanna found in her research that there was no calorimeter similar to the one she was designing except expensive models, costing in excess of €5000. Her device cost less than €50 to build. She hopes her design will fill an important gap in amateur instrumentation for people who are interested in learning about heat transfer and thermodynamics. She will also use the device for her own research of different materials.

Because of the affordability of the device, it could also potentially be used in labs in secondary schools and colleges for different demonstrations and experiments such as measuring the temperatures of phase transitions.

CCS is duly proud of Joanna’s achievement and we wish her continued success in this field of study in the future.
