RSA Talk

On Thursday 2nd March, Anne Patten from the Road Safety Authority Education Team, visited the school and spoke to all fifth year and LCA students about various aspects of road safety. The visit was organised by LCA2 student, Amy Burke, who had researched the issue of road deaths for her Contemporary Issues Task.

Anne began by reflecting on the number of fatalities on Irish roads in 2015, 2016 and so far in 2017. In particular she focussed on the age profiles of those who died, emphasising that those aged 16 to 35 are particularly vulnerable. She also reminded students that pedestrians and cyclists make up a significant percentage of those who died. She then spoke about becoming more aware when using the roads and simple precautions to take to improve safety. A discussion about ‘killer behaviours’ was very interesting. These include excessive speed, using a mobile phone while driving, driving with alcohol or drugs and incorrect use of seatbelts.

Anne went through the steps to becoming a fully qualified driver, how to apply for the different stages and the costs involved. She was very impressed to hear that one of our fifth year students passed his driving test in the last week!

The final part of the talk focussed on the devastation left behind when someone is killed on the road. She played an extended version of the ad used by the RSA over Christmas about the death of four  year old, Ciaran Treacy, in an accident involving a drunk driver. Anne focussed on the fact that we all use the roads every day and we all have a responsibility to use the roads safely. Her talk was both enjoyable and worthwhile and was a very good learning experience for all involved.
